UNDERSTANDING YOUR SYMPTOMS

TMD can involve the jaw joint, chewing muscles, neck, and nervous system.

Temporomandibular disorders describe a group of problems affecting the jaw joints and surrounding muscles. Your evaluation considers jaw motion, symptom behavior, muscle tenderness, neck mobility, headaches, clenching habits, dental history, and the activities affected by your symptoms.

COMMON SIGNS

Symptoms can show up in more than one way.

Pain near the jaw joint, cheek, temple, or ear

Limited or uneven mouth opening

Painful clicking, catching, or locking

Headaches or neck symptoms associated with jaw tension

WHAT MAY CONTRIBUTE

The painful area is only part of the picture.

A thorough examination looks at how your symptoms behave, how you move, and what your daily life or sport requires. Common contributors may include:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Clear answers before your first visit.

Is TMJ the same as TMD?+

TMJ names the temporomandibular joint itself. TMD is the broader term for disorders involving the joint, chewing muscles, and related structures.

Do you treat inside the mouth?+

Intraoral techniques may be considered when clinically appropriate and only with your informed consent. External treatment and exercise options are also available.

Do I still need to see a dentist?+

Physical therapy and dental care can serve different roles. Dental evaluation may be appropriate for tooth pain, infection, bite changes, appliance decisions, or other dental concerns.

Should I stop eating solid food?+

Not automatically. Temporary food-texture changes may help highly irritable symptoms, but recommendations should match your presentation and nutritional needs.
